This is the spectacle that will greet the world on 11 June 2010 – more than six years after South Africa was chosen as hosts, bringing the largest sporting event in the world to the African continent for the first time.

On Tuesday, 2 March, this celebration of football and of Africa’s humanity will be just 100 days away.

What will you do on 2 March to mark this important landmark for the country and the international football community?

2 March is therefore earmarked as a day on which South Africans, here and abroad, are called upon to demonstrate their excitement for the tournament, and to display their passion for the country and the beautiful game.

From flying the flag and donning Bafana Bafana kit, to feasting on homegrown meals and music, 2 March is a celebration of what the country has already achieved in preparing for the tournament, and a chance to get our hearts and minds into the spirit of the FIFA World Cup.

So, what can you do on 2 March?
“Fly the Flag” on the day!

The 100 Day Countdown builds on the “Fly the flag” initiative, which brings together all who live in South Africa around the country’s national symbols and anthem, and expresses support for Bafana Bafana.

Organisation and institutions are invited to host events at midday (12 noon) on 2 March, enabling staff, clients and partners to sing the national anthem, wear the Bafana Bafana kit, dance the Diski and acknowledge the flag.

Mini-football, football quizzes, chats about what makes us good hosts and good football supporters and discussing ways in which football can bring us closer as a nation, are among the activities that could serve as in-house team-building exercises.

Of course, a simple braai will add to the feel-good factor!

Four countries participating in next year’s World Cup have elected to set up their base training camps along the Cape’s Garden Route.
France and Denmark will be based in Knysna, Paraguay in Mossel Bay and Japan in George..

Japanese National Football Association president Motoaki Inukai made the announcement on a whirlwind trip to George after attending Japan’s friendly match against Bafana Bafana in Port Elizabeth on Saturday.
“Team coach Takeshi Okada chose George because of its safe and beautiful environment, which will enable players to concentrate on practising for their matches,” he said.
Inukai was “honestly surprised” by his impressions of South Africa, which was portrayed in the Japanese media as unsafe.
“I know now why he (Okada) liked George on his first site visit. It is very different from the image we had before we came here.”

Eden District Mayor Leon Dorfling, who is championing Eden’s involvement in 2010, told Inukai Eden would not compromise on the safety of visitors.
“This announcement is music to our ears. Eden and George municipalities are very proud to host Mr Inukai here today and we want to assure him that the Garden Route has excellent infrastructure in a very safe environment. We are also not compromising on safety and security,” he said.

The district was working closely with national and provincial government and other role players to integrate public safety plans for the World Cup.
Eden acting municipal manager and 2010 manager Morne Hoogbaard said Inukai’s announcement was the culmination of a very committed approach by the Eden 2010 team to ensure that the district benefited from the World Cup.
Hoogbaard said Eden was the first district in the country to commit significant resources towards positioning the region as a destination of choice for teams and fans.
“The Japanese soccer team is known to travel with a large following of about 22000 supporters, and although not all of them will stay in Eden, this will leave a long-term legacy for business and tourism,” he said.
George mayor Flip de Swardt said it would be an honour to host the team.

10. Tsitsikamma Canopy Tours (Storms River)

The adventure commences with a thorough briefing explaining safety and the provided equipment. Suitable for ages 7 – 70, weighing up to 120kg (no pregnant woman allowed) this activity is a gentle glide across ten cabled slides to ten wooden platforms built high up in the trees.  11. Skydive in Mossel Bay (Mossel Bay)

 12. Abseiling in the Kaaimans Gorge (Wilderness)

The serene Kaaimans Gorge holds one of the most beautiful abseil sights you will find. You have a chance to do two 45m abseils right next to a magnificent waterfall. The first abseil is an easy one to get you used to the idea of trusting the ropes and the second one is slightly more technical, however just as exhilarating.

What also makes this sight special is that you land in a canoe at the bottom. You need not have abseiled before, however it is not for the faint-hearted! It is also important to remember not to wear slippery shoes.

 13. Cango Caves Tours (Oudtshoorn)

The Cango Caves are a series of dripstone caverns that open into vast halls of towering stalagmite formations with names like ‘the bridal couple’, ‘glass flower fantasy’, ‘weird cango candle’ and ‘the hanging shawl’.

Not all of the caves are open to the public – there is more than one section to the caves that took millions of years to form one of the world’s great natural wonders – but the main sections are available for amazing exploratory subterranean walks that include fumbling around on all fours in an effort to see all that is viewable.

14. Ride an Ostrich at Ostrich Show Farm (Oudtshoorn)

To ride an Ostrich, visit one of the Ostrich Show Farms in Oudtshoorn, South Africa. Here you can observe large flocks of Ostriches at different stages of development. There are petting areas where you can cuddle the chicks or feed an ostrich by hand, watch how feather dusters and boas are made. 15. Hold a Cub (Oudtshoorn)

This sanctuary to Africa’s endangered cats is preserved in the Karoo’s picturesque town of Oudtshoorn. Here seeing and feeling the cats and their cubs promotes awareness of their plight and population threat.

Holding and touching Cheetah and Tiger cubs is a moving experience for human ‘cubs’ and adults. Full grown Cheetah and Tiger encounters are a privileged interaction for visitors 16 years and older as observation of the animals has surveyed a different response from these full grown cats to children. All funds raised from these encounters are used in the breeding and conservation program.

17. Drumming Experience – Find Your Rhythm (Knysna)

Find your rhythm to the beat of your own drum. Stomp your feet in ‘rain boots’ like a traditional African dancer and learn the Gumboot Dance.  18. Fishing at Botlierskop Game Reserve (Little Brak)

Try your hand at fishing with an experienced guide or ask your guide to arrange a fishing rod and tackle. Species you are likely to catch are Carp, Large mouth Bas, Blue Kurper and Fresh water eels. Strictly Catch and release! For those who would prefer to relax, there is an informative river cruise where guests can savour the moment. 20. Scenic introductory flight lesson (Mossel Bay)

30 Eden Challenge

The 2008 Eden Challenge (200-260km’s) is the ultimate 30 hour event for the top teams. The teams can expect classic adventure racing terrain. Real Southern Cape splendor! Expect an ’Amazing Race” experience with great mountain biking, awesome scenic hikes and brilliant paddling. Navigational skills will dictate your time spent out there. The event starts off with a hiking section and race packs must be prepared for the first night hike. Expect a hike of 70k’s, bike 150k’s and paddle 40k’s.

 8    Summer Sun Festival ‘09

Taking place in Mossel Bay from 8 December 2009 to 8 January 2010, the festival hosts more than 1 million patrons every year. No matter where your interest lies – wine, beauties and music – this festival has it all.

The celebration kicks off this year on 12 December with Laurika Rauch, who is one of Afrikaans music’s celebrated stars. At the same time, be sure not to miss the first Diaz Decadence Festival, featuring an Amsterdam-esque street festival with a feast of fine wine. Cellars across the country will be partaking in this event which will take place from 12 – 14 December.

 8    Great Outeniqua MTB Tour

Location: George
Duration: 2 days

The event always starts in the traditional way, with a whip. At the crack of the whip they brave the Montagu Pass and the 55km that lies ahead of them. As the day continues and the cyclists enter the Little Karoo the temperature rises, the conditions become harsh and difficult. After 52km and only 3km remaining the sight of the Daskop turn off is a welcome one and the Louvain sign post is even more welcome.
